Radon

The radioactive gas found in some homes that can cause health problems is called radon. Radon is a naturally occurring gas that forms from the decay of uranium in soil, rock, and water. It can seep into homes through cracks and openings in the foundation, accumulating to high levels indoors.

Long-term exposure to high levels of radon is associated with an increased risk of lung cancer, particularly in smokers. Radon is considered the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking and is responsible for thousands of lung cancer deaths each year.

Testing for radon levels in homes is recommended, and if elevated levels are found, mitigation measures such as sealing cracks and installing ventilation systems can help reduce radon exposure and lower the risk to occupants' health.
